Want to learn more about that spider outside your window or the little beetle you have seen in your local forest digging into a rotting log? Learn all about entomology (the scientific study of insects) with Machel Spence. We will have a blast learning about insects' anatomy, behavior and how important they are to the environment. We will be hunting, collecting, and even starting your very own collection of pinned specimens. There will be no class held on May 16th due to early release. A class for any student interested in learning or increasing their knowledge of chess. Chess study has shown to increase math skills, concentration, memory, and self-confidence. Chess4Life instructors work closely under the guidance of National Chess Master Elliott Neff. All instructors follow the coaching methods that were developed by Elliott over the past 17 years in training multiple students and teams to both state and national titles (including the 2005 and 2008 National Elementary K-5 Championship Team). Elliott opened the Chess4Life Chess Center in Bellevue where students can receive additional training and where Chess4Life coaches continue to develop and hone their chess coaching skills with personal guidance from Elliott.

This class explores a variety of art-making skills such as observational drawing, painting, and printmaking. Students will discuss an artwork each week to start the class and then explore a variety of mediums and techniques. Mediums will include professional watercolor pencils, ink, and oil pastels. Student will also create their own hand made book for sketching. At the end of the quarter there will be a weekend trip to a local museum where Coral will lead a student-centered discussion on the artwork and do guided sketching activities.

Build, create, design LEGO. Students will be able to bring in their own LEGO, or build with a variety of sets provided (space, Star Wars, Technic). Older students will have a chance to make stop action movies of their creations, or a set of directions for their own idea. Bus transportation is available to 4th and 5th grade students. Learn the secrets of building with LEGO Technic and programing the NXT LEGO computer to make motorized LEGO Robots with sensors. Make a pond boat! Create a scale model of a renowned racing boat. Learn about carving, shaping sewing, epoxy and other glues, and good old hard work. Races occur in June at the Center for Wooden Boats. Commitment needed for the entire school year. This class is open only to students who participated in the fall and winter sessions. If your child was enrolled previously you do not need to enroll in the spring session. The enrollment is automatic.
